big lions, part 1

there were so many awesome lion encounters in the Maasai Mara, I’ve  divided them up. After seeing hundreds of wildebeest, giraffes, and zebras (pics of those later), by day 2 we were wondering if we were gonna see some big cats at all. Around noon the sun was getting hot, and we turned a corner to see this:

I thought Fred, our easy-going driver, would stop the car… but instead he inched closer to this female lion. How close? about 20 feet away. Close enough to count the flies on her nose.

She was clearly overheating in this bush, and probably annoyed by our presence, so she started moving away. Looks like she had a nasty cut on her right shoulder. Being good doctors, we offered to sew it up, but got no response, not even a growl.

And she was gone, and we could breathe a little easier… until our next lion encounter an hour later. stay tuned
